Fashion is big business in the twenty first century, and fashion photography plays a huge part in getting the clothes shown to a worldwide audience.
While many fashion models are world famous, the photographers themselves also attain a certain level of celebrity. While not always known worldwide, they are certainly known by many of those aspiring to play a role in fashion photography themselves.
One Photo – Two Subjects?
Where fashion photography is concerned, every photo actually has two subjects – the model and the clothes. When the model is world famous, it is vital to make sure they do not detract from the clothes themselves, as it is the clothing that is the primary reason for the photograph being taken.
The photographer has to consider how the backdrop and composition of the photo can enhance how the clothing is presented to the public who will see the picture. Fashion photography has the power to persuade people to buy clothes they might not otherwise buy. Many hours can be spent trying to create the perfect picture that shows the clothes to their best advantage.
It’s All About Image
Clothing is an object. It is the job of the photographer to give that clothing an image that will sell it to the masses.
Take underwear for example. A top model will no doubt look better in it than any average person and most of us will know this. Fashion photography has to convince us that if we buy the underwear, we will also be buying into the image and power conveyed in the photograph. In other words, buy the underwear and you too will feel empowered and alluring.
The best fashion photography creates a story behind the clothes themselves. All the different elements in the photograph come together to present an image, a feeling and a way of life that can all be attained if you buy the item yourself.
Not surprisingly, the world of fashion photography is as hard to break into as the world of fashion modelling. Perseverance and determination are required if you hope to make the grade. The best advice is to attend a college or university to gain a recognised qualification, enter as many fashion photography competitions as you can, and get your name known. Build yourself a website and promote it as heavily as you can.
Success didn’t come overnight for any of the world’s most successful photographers. Maybe in a few months or years from now, it will be your turn.

Quite often when we take photos, we pay attention to the subject of the picture, but the background is equally as important.
Photography backgrounds can take many forms. In a studio they can be as simple as a roll of thick paper that drops down behind the subject. But when you are outdoors, photography backgrounds can be altogether more challenging.
A Question Of Perspective
When you are taking photographs of a location, it’s worth considering how the background will influence the finished photo. Sometimes you can focus on an object in the foreground that will help to give the photograph more depth.
This gives the viewer an idea of how far away the background is. This is especially useful in landscape shots, where the background can be the horizon, or a set of distant cliffs, for example.
A Question Of Detail
Sometimes an object or location that is quite mundane can be used to great effect as a background. Different photography backgrounds for portraits can help to emphasise certain aspects of the person you are photographing – or even provide a total contrast to them.
Some examples of this could be the lined face of an elderly vicar, taken against a freshly spray painted wall covered in graffiti, or a young girl photographed against an old and crumbling wall. Photography backgrounds can help to make the subject of your picture really stand out, as well as contributing to the depth and meaning of the photo itself.
Taking A Different View
Sometimes photography backgrounds can provide you with more than one set of photographs.
For example, you might take a selection of portrait shots against the background of a deserted warehouse. But the building itself may be full of detail and interest, so a further selection of shots could then be taken with the warehouse as the subject of the photo.
Buildings in the distance, the horizon, and a chain link fence some fifty yards away – all of these things could then serve as photography backgrounds for the warehouse itself. It’s all a question of how you see things.
Photography backgrounds can be quite limiting if you only think of them as flat surfaces behind your subject. Angled and overlapping surfaces can provide your pictures with extra depth and interest, and with some creative thinking these can be achieved outdoors just as easily as they can in a photography studio.

Taking Photos of Wildlife
The main idea is not to scare away your targets. There are a few tips to remember that will reduce the chances of the wildlife running away. Do not use the flash on your camera because this will instantly alert any animals to your presence. If you wear fragrance, the wildlife will also know you are near, so do not use a scent if you are planning to photograph wildlife.
Keeping a Distance from Your Subjects
Use your zoom lens because you will be able to take pictures of animals at a distance without disturbing them. Take plenty of pictures to compensate for an uncontrolled subject. When you are focusing on an animal, make sure the eyes are in focus and shoot from different angles for interest. Using a small and quiet camera will help you to remain unnoticed.
Sunrise or Sunset Shots
When you are taking a picture of a beautiful sky, do not let the horizon sit in the middle of the picture because this is just not interesting. Instead, have only 1/3 of the image space devoted to the sky. Add depth by having a natural setting at the edges of the image. Take plenty of shots from different angles so you can choose the very best ones for printing or sharing.
Use a tripod because of the steadiness that it will give you for longer shots. For panoramic shots, shoot from left to right. Instead of direct light which can be harsh, take shots when the sun is behind a cloud for diffused lighting conditions.
Keep the Camera Still
If you cannot use a tripod, you may have to hold your breath while taking shots because this will lessen any movements of your hands.
The Best Lighting is Natural
For nature images, the best lighting is natural because it shows the brilliant colors naturally without any harsh lighting or shadows. If you need to lessen the light, drape a piece of fabric to create a softer light.
You can give form to your photographs if you use natural elements of line and patterns to create a composition. The simpler your background is, the more important your subjects will appear in the image.
